Over the past ten years, I have served students in grades K, 1, 2, 3, and 5 in both self-contained and departmentalized settings. I also have three years’ experience collaborating with, and sharing a classroom with a SPED co-teacher. I have served on leadership teams, planning committees, and as a technology trainer on various software programs. I have provided mentorship to numerous new teachers, student teachers, and practicum students. As the state of Georgia changed from QCC to GPS to CCGPS, I have adapted and continued to plan creative and stimulating lessons which differentiate for my students and keep them engaged.
I do not believe there is any "cookie-cutter" way to teach. To me, it is all about knowing your students' academic needs, understanding the dynamics of your group, and learning the individual needs and quirks of your students. I like facilitating small group collaboration, providing small group instruction, using songs and chants daily, and when appropriate, whole group instruction. Again, it all depends on the situation and the needs of the students. It is our job as teachers to know how to diagnose those needs and provide the correct form of instructional support.
I don't like a lot of attention... I have been the recipient of Teacher of the Month several times, although, my greatest honor was when my 5th graders surprised me with a special certificate and written speech at their graduation 2 years ago.
I have a BSED in Early Childhood Education from Valdosta State University in Valdosta, Ga (2006).
I have taught just about every kind of student; the smartest of the smart, severely struggling, misbehaved, grieving, shy, ADHD, insecure, non-English speaking, poor, rich, you name it! I've loved them all! They each require something different from me and from each other. Creating an environment where they feel safe and accepted is essential to the quantity they will learn and impact their daily and future feelings toward school. Once this foundation is established is when the quality learning really begins. All children can learn, and many times each learning style and depth of understanding is as different as the students themselves. It is our job to understand them, meet them where they are, and push them to reach their fullest potential. A happy, successful student is what most motivates me to be the best teacher I can be... the kind they never forget! I love TpT because it inspires us to collaborate and support each other as educators!
