What educators are saying

This is a wonderful resource that is engaging across many lower grade levels. This resource has been very helpful in helping students identify emotions and in giving students some strategies to deal with strong emotions.
This resource was exactly what I was looking for while teaching Zones. I appreciate the variety of visuals to use as we move through the curriculum.

    IDEAS FOR USE:

    • ➔ Calm Corner: Check-in to the calm corner on their way into the classroom/home prior to morning meetings or circles. Use pegs with their names on them or attach to a magnetic whiteboard and use magnetic name tags to indicate where they are on the scale.
    • ➔ Reduced-size printing: Some resources are created for high-resolution printing in A3, but they may be printed at 3 to 1 page or smaller for more intimate 1:1 check-ins.
    • ➔ Zone Flip Cards: Laminate your choice of Zones information posters or cards, add a ring to the corner and make zone cards for the children to flip through to indicate their current zone for teacher or carers to see at a glance.
    • ➔ Check-In Folder: Create individual check-in folders with resources glued into a manilla folder with either the desk version with (or without) explanations or a reduced horizontal or vertical Power Scale alongside the Self-care Power Tools. Allow the children to personalise their cover with different emotions or emojis. Check-In with these at various times throughout the day. Add strategies to their Power Tool kit as they find new strategies that work.
    • ➔ Check-In Journal: Glue a reduced sized vertical 2:1 page Power Scale into the inside cover of an A5 exercise book, the Self-care Power Tools in the back cover and information sheet/s in the front pages. Trim the journal pages so that the scale can be seen on side of each page. Get students to record their self-reflections daily (in words or illustrations):
      • 1. number of the scale & energy levels, 2. emotions, 3. sensations in their body (body signs), 4. situation which may have contributed to their emotions, 5. thoughts, and 6. self-care strategies they will try to get back to their happy place (green zone)
    • ➔ Modelling: Provide opportunity for children to observe how their teacher or parent is feeling to connect more deeply with them. Teacher or carer can share openly their current levels, how they feel in their body and strategies they use to get back to their happy place.
    • ➔ Extension: Play charades with a range of emotions to demonstrate how they look in their body, then categorise them into the 4x Zones of Emotions. Create a list of these to be displayed in the home/room or in their books.

    YOU’LL LOVE THIS IF:

♥ you feel disconnected from students or children in your care & want to connect and understand them more deeply

♥ you want to teach children why self-awareness is important for our overall wellbeing

♥ you want to develop self-regulation in your students/children through daily reflection

♥ you want to create a shared language in the classroom/home to express emotions and energy levels

♥ you want to establish a trauma-informed classroom or home environment

    WHAT OTHERS SAY:

“Students love the opportunity to share where they are on the scale as they enter the classroom, especially those still needing support to co-regulate their emotions. They use the power scale to alert me that they are not ready to learn or participate and so we modify the learning environment or give them a choice from their self-care power tools to allow them the time needed to re-join the class. It’s been great to observe the whole class start to use a common language to share how they are feeling too.”

PRINTING NOTE: To optimise printing quality to high resolution, some files are created in A3 size. Please be mindful of this when printing to ‘print to scale’ or ‘to fit page’ depending on your printer settings. Prints can be printed as is or enlarged/reduced to suit your purpose.
