Description
Does teaching writing and young writers make you nervous or not sure how to get started? Are you looking for a step-by-step guide in helping you launch a writer's workshop approach successfully in your 2nd grade classroom?
I have put together 20(+) lessons to use in 2nd grade to get writer’s workshop underway. These are lessons that I used as a veteran teacher, but improved by what I have learned through my training as a literacy coach. I have taken bits and pieces from the experts that I have studied: Lucy Calkins, Katie Wood Ray, Matt Glover, Fountas and Pinnell, Peter Johnston, Donald Graves, Marie Clay, Ralph Fletcher, Andrea McCarrier, Horn and Giacobbe, Tony Stead, and Carl Anderson.
This guide is designed to help you create a community of writers that understand the routines and expectations of writers in your classroom. This foundation must be established to ensure that your students have the attitude and stamina to meet the Common Core State Standards in 2nd grade. Included in this guide: background information and rationale, writer's workshop structure, materials needed, personal narrative mentor text list, management forms, clip art for writer's workshop folders, writing paper samples, detailed mini-lessons including objective, mini-lesson, teacher model, student have-a-go, independent writing time, conferencing with students, wrap-up and author's chair, extensions, and behaviors to notice, and possible follow-up mini-lessons.
I hope that you will use these lessons to see the joy in teaching young writers. I know this is hard work and this is your life vest. These lessons have been carefully created with several goals in mind:
1. To establish routines and behaviors for writer’s workshop for the entire school year
2. To build classroom community, excitement for writing, and a can-do attitude in students
3. To let students see themselves as writers that will rise to their teacher’s level of expectation
4. To offer students the opportunity to jump into writing at his/her instructional level
5. To teach students to become independent learners in reading and writing
