Description
This 50-slide presentation consists of 3 lessons based on the Maya Angelou 1978 poem, "Life doesn't frighten me."
1. The first lesson focuses on theme. It includes a writing exercise for students focusing on things that frighten them, and how they have addressed their fears.
2. The second lesson focuses on rhythm, and introduces and teaches trochee, iamb, and anapest, with fun and accessible examples and exercises, from familiar sources. They are then applied to the poem. More advanced students can acquire and practice scansion skills for these three types of meter.
3. The third lesson focuses on illustration. It uses the illustrated children's book made from the poem in 1993, which includes art by Jean-Michel Basquiat. There are a few short videos about Basquiat (appropriate for middle-school students), his work and legacy. The lesson then looks at the illustrations of the poem. The activity for this section asks students to illustrate in their own way some line, stanza, or theme of the poem.
This set of lessons is ideal for distance learning over the course of approximately 1 week.
It is suitable for use during Women's History Month (March), Black History Month (February), or as an ELA lesson at any time. Alternate cover slides are provided.
