FREEBIE ALERT
After teaching Reynold's Long Way Down, I realized that there are so many common themes between the texts we are reading in 9th grade this year.
I showed my students "West Side Story" in order to build a bridge between texts and prepare them for reading Shakespeare's The Tragedy of Romeo and Juliet.
In this lesson, we started with watching and analyzing the lyrics to "America". I showed them the music video for America from the 2021 version of West Side Story.
I asked them to discuss commonalities between texts and identify the central idea in the song, and prompted them to find the strongest piece of evidence that highlights that message.
They connected the messages in "America" to those about the unattainable American Dream in Steinbeck's Of Mice and Men. They also found examples of violence and needing to fight or be fought from Reynold's Long Way Down.
Activity: We then viewed the movie and they had to turn Big Ideas into Central Ideas or Central Messages/Themes.
I included some of their responses, and these slides are editable.
I included the worksheet on a separate freebie post.
