HOW DO I USE THIS IN MY CLASSROOM?

Most of the pages in this pack are pretty self-explanatory. Below I have written how to use the picture walks in my classroom.

Picture Walks:

I have provided real life photos of each season. These are posted in your classroom and students will walk from photo to photo and discuss what they see in the photo. This is great for ESL Students who are learning English as a second language. It is also great for students to collaborate and work together in an environment where they are free to move around the classroom.

The Picture Sets

I use these in a pocket chart. I place the season strips at the top of the chart and then I put the cards with the pictures on them at the bottom of the pocket chart. I then have students come up and select a picture. They then tell me what season they believe it fits under and why. After this they will place it under that season. We continue this until the pictures are put back under the names of the seasons.

Weather Vocabulary Strips

These are great for a writing center or can be sorted like the picture sets description listed above (depending on how high your kids are). I like to cut them out and laminate them. Then I give the kids the Writing Words Pages and have them copy the words onto the right pages. I do this during an independent station.

WHEN I TEACH THIS AND A LITTLE ABOUT WHAT I DO: (GREAT TEACHER TIPS)

I live in California, so my weather does not change a whole lot from day to day. I always joke that we really do not have great seasons either… we just go straight from summer to winter with a small dash of fall and spring mixed in between…

So, I use this packet in January. We seem to get the biggest changes in weather during that month. While I am teaching this unit, I INCORPORATE A TON OF TECHNOLOGY INTO THIS!!!! I usually start with the technology at the beginning of my school year and just mention it from time to time.

In California, I focus on some specific areas. We watch live cameras (Google live cameras from places – we watch amazing ones from the beaches to ski resorts. I also have a hotel from Maui on my computer and we watch animals live from the Monterey Bay Aquarium). Anyway… focus… I start to show my kids cameras in a couple of places. I am located about halfway inland from San Francisco and the California/Nevada border. So, we watch a camera out at the beach (In Santa Cruz). I also regularly show my kids cameras at a ski resort in the mountains and cameras in Yosemite.

While we are watching these, we compare the pictures. Is it a cloudy day in Santa Cruz? Do the kids think we will get those clouds over our school a little bit later? We talk about the kinds of weather that could be headed our way. Then we also talk about the weather that goes past us and ends up in the mountains (the ski resort and in Yosemite). In Yosemite we watch the waterfalls and talk about the water cycle.

In January we watch these live cameras often to see the changes. We also will watch the weather on the news. My kids also LOVE watching doppler radar on my computer. They especially LOVE listening to the rain on our roof when they see the different colors on the radar… it is fun to watch them get excited about the changes in our weather.
