Description
Memorizing a word list is difficult for children with learning disabilities, but most children can recall interesting stories when read with repetition.
Give your students the strategies to spell sounds with multiple spelling choices using a fun step-by-step decision-making tool.
VOWEL TEAM STORYBOARDS:
- 66 pages in total. Print on double-sided heavy weight paper (33 pages)
- 13 Stories featuring the vowel teams: ai, ey (they), ea (steak), ei, ee, -ey (key), ie, -ie (movie), ea (health), -igh, oa, -oe, ui
- Six flow charts show spelling strategies for the long vowel sounds of /a/, /e/, /i/, /o/, /u/, and short /e/.
SPELLING STRATEGIES: Please note that these are generalizations about the most commonly used words.
- Only vowel sounds with confusing and multiple spellings are featured in a story.
- These visual stories highlight the least common choice for spelling a vowel sound. The student correctly codes words by eliminating or using the featured spelling choice in a familiar story.
- Each vowel sound is also represented on a flow chart showing all the spelling options one step at a time.
- This tool prompts students to make sequential spelling decisions until the strategy becomes automatic.
HOW TO USE THE STORYBOARD: (use after teaching the vowel team lesson)
- Slowly read the storyboard aloud to the student while they follow along, looking at each picture.
- Reread the story, but now have the student look at the words below the pictures.
- The student will now "read" the story by looking only at the pictures and words.Feel free to give reminders about the details before the next picture box. The exact wording is not necessary.
- As students reread the story, they will write only the pictured vowel team words (without affixes) in the same order. Use the blank grids provided.
- Periodically ask the student to name the story representing a vowel sound. Then, have the student retell the story from memory and reread it if necessary.
HOW TO USE THE SPELLING CHOICE FLOW CHART: (the level is noted below the vowel sound)
- The student uses the spelling choice flow chart when spelling a vowel sound. They make conscious decisions and follow the path, usually ending with the correct spelling.
- Ask the student to name the vowel team's story or the vowel's spelling strategy during the phoneme drill. Show the spelling team flow charts until the student masters the strategy. Use the blank flow charts provided to practice the vowel sound spelling choices.
NOTE:
•Underlined words may have different spellings and meanings.
•Asterisked* words may be too advanced, so use these words for reading only.
•Asterisked* dots on flow charts represent the most common spelling choice.
•Teach the oo (moon) sounds by origin and placement in the word.
