What educators are saying

This is an excellent resource. It gives enough historical context for students to understand the political underpinnings of the current debate about a Voice. I like that it links through to videos and further reading directly in the doc. Research task is also a smart way of pulling it together.

Description

This resource supports students to understand the historical context that informs the current debate about a First Nations Voice to Parliament. It is split across three lessons:

Lesson 1: Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander culture before 1788

Lesson 2: The impact of the arrival of European settlers in 1788

Lesson 3: The Uluru Statement from the Heart

The resource looks at six key areas of Australian historical context, including the Stolen Generations, the 1967 Referendum, Mabo and Native Title.

The student workbook includes links to external audio-visual resources, reflective learning activities, and includes a longer research task (essay or audio-visual presentation).

The resource additionally includes a glossary of terms and a simplified timeline of events leading up to the Voice to Parliament/Uluru Statement of the Heart.

The workbook can be taught in sequence across 3-4 lessons, or can be set as homework.
