Description

This NO PREP, multi-day lesson engages students in exploring the legacy of the Global War on Terror from a variety of perspectives. The lesson includes: 

  • An excerpt from a reading describing the experience of a paramilitary officer in Afghanistan in 2009
  • An interactive Nearpod or Canva presentation on the human, economic, social and political costs, as detailed by the “Costs of War” Project at Brown University
  • Photos and stories from children who grew up during the Iraq war
  • The personal story of a sixteen-year-old Muslim girl living in New York whose life was thrown upside by the Patriot Act
  • An episode of Aljazeera’s Listening Post called “The Forever War: 20 Years After 9/11” which examines the role of US media in creating the climate of fear that undergirded the War on Terror
  • Comprehension and reflection questions  for each learning activity
  • A final reflection activity
  • An optional "define and apply" type question (like # 2 on paper 1) for IB Global Politics students on soft power and U.S. media in the wake of 911.
