What educators are saying

Very helpful for making sure the kids were paying attention to the movie after we read the graphic novel. Some of the open ended questions were a little difficult for SPED but should be great for gen ed middle school to high school.
We watched the movie after reading “To Build a Fire” for a comparative literature assignment and scaffolding for Socratic seminar. This movie guide worked great to help them not only keep the plot straight but analyze various literary elements.

Description

Call of the Wild is based on Jack London’s adventure novel by the same name. This Disney movie follows Buck, a pampered dog, who is stolen and sold as a sled dog. Set in the 1890s, Buck’s new life leads him on several adventures as he learns to survive. This film takes place in Yukon during the Klondike Gold Rush. Buck learns many lessons from various owners and learns to answer the call of the wild. The film stars Harrison Ford, Omar Sy, Cara Gee, Dan Stevens, Bradley Whitford, and Karen Gillan.

My movie guide contains 35 questions and an answer key has been provided for your convenience. There are also 5 discussion questions to answer after viewing the movie. NOTE- The film version takes several liberties and is different from the book. There are key parts of the book that are not in the film and some portions that are changed. For example, John Thornton is killed by the Yeehats in the book, but in the film he is killed by Hal. My discussion questions focus more on the film version in case your class did not read the book in advance. The film's runtime is 100 minutes and it is rated PG for some violence, peril, thematic elements and mild language. I would allow for a minimum of 2 hours for this lesson since there are optional discussion questions for after the film.

DISTANCE LEARNING- This movie could be used for distance learning. Just be sure to remove the key before loading to Google Classroom. This lesson can be posted on private classroom sites that require for student login, but may not be posted publicly. Students would need access to this film that is available for streaming purchase. This could also be used for individual families who would like to incorporate this into their home learning during our NTI days.

By purchasing this item, you agree to use it for your classroom use only and will not share with others, claim as your own, or post publicly online. Additional licenses are available for a reduced price.
