What educators are saying

Used this as a whole class review game for symbiotic relationships. Kids were engaged and intrigued by the pictures! Will definitely be using again for next year.
This is a great resource that helps students to distinguish between the different types of symbiosis.

Description

This power point has 20 symbiotic scenarios. The students are to read each slide and analyze the pictures in order to choose which symbiotic level is depicted.

You can also print the slides out and use them as task cards. The students can record their answers on the answer sheet.

The five symbiotic relationships presented are endosymbiosis, commensalism, predation, parasitism and mutualism.

I upload the power point to the class website and have my students work with a partner on a laptop.It is a lot of fun to hear them talk about each situation using educational dialogue. This is also a good activity for flipped classrooms.

If you do not have a set of classroom laptops or ipads you can also print the power point slides and place small groupings around the room and turn it into a centers activity. You could also print the slides out as class sets.

(12) Science concepts. The student knows that interdependence and interactions occur within an environmental system. The student is expected to:

(A) interpret relationships, including predation, parasitism, commensalism, mutualism, and competition among organisms;

Next Generation Science Standards

MS-LS2-1. Analyze and interpret data to provide evidence for the effects of resource availability on organisms and populations of organisms in an ecosystem.
MS-LS2-2. Construct an explanation that predicts patterns of interactions among organisms across multiple ecosystems. [Clarification Statement: Emphasis is on predicting consistent patterns of interactions in different ecosystems in terms of the relationships among and between organisms and abiotic components of ecosystems. Examples of types of interactions could include competitive, predatory, and mutually beneficial.]
