What educators are saying

The lessons are detailed. It also includes grammar lessons, but I did not use that part of the resource. My students learned a lot about this genre of writing.
I absolutely love your writing units. They are concise, easy to follow and help the students so much. I love the language arts lessons too. Thank you so much!

Description

This 5 week opinion writing unit will help you teach your second grade students to write reviews and persuasive letters! This pack has everything you need, from complete opinion writing lesson plans to writing paper to posters to writing rubrics and more.

The unit begins with having students write reviews to share their opinions about restaurants, movies, games, and more. Then, students write persuasive letters to people in the community with suggestions about ways to improve the community.

This opinion writing unit is designed to be taught toward the beginning or middle of the year but can be used anytime you want to teach students how to write opinion/persuasive pieces and/or letters.

In this opinion writing unit, students will learn how to:

- Plan and write persuasive reviews and letters

- Craft engaging introductions and conclusions for their pieces

- Provide background information on the topic that they are writing about

- Give reasons to support an opinion, and expand upon those reasons with more details and examples

- Include descriptions and adjectives in their opinion writing

- Use transition words

- Follow writing conventions, including by capitalizing product names, using commas in the greeting and closing of a letter, using apostrophes in contractions and possessives, and spell words correctly using a dictionary

- Revise and edit their opinion writing independently and with a partner

This unit includes:

- 26 detailed minilessons that will last a little over 5 weeks

- Daily language arts/grammar exercises that complement the minilessons

- Clear unit goals, daily objectives, and Common Core alignment

- Posters, visual aids, and materials to go with the minilessons (all color materials also have black and white versions included)
