Description

This 5 week informational writing unit will help you teach your second grade students to write biographies and lab reports! This pack has everything you need, from complete informational writing lesson plans, to biography articles for student research, to writing paper, to posters, to writing rubrics, and more.

The unit begins with students writing biographies about famous people by doing some simple research (20 different articles at a second grade reading level are provided for student use). Then, students will move on to writing lab reports about science experiments involving solids, liquids, and gases. Students incorporate those lab reports into informational (nonfiction) books.

This unit is designed to be taught toward the middle or end of the year.

In this informational writing unit, students will learn how to:

- Take notes on a topic and use the notes to write a biography

- Write lab reports to describe what they observed during a science experiment

- Plan and write nonfiction books with true information

- Include examples, definitions, and comparisons in their books

- Organize the information in their books using a table of contents, headings, and page numbers

- Create text features for their books

- Write strong introductions and conclusions

- Use transition words in their writing

- Include adjectives and adverbs in their writing

- Use contractions and possessives

- Correctly use other writing conventions

- Revise and edit their informational writing independently and with a partner

- Daily language arts/grammar exercises that complement the minilessons
