Description

Do you need to teach about mathematical thinking in relation to the solar system? Students will learn about the scale and properties of objects in the solar system by using mathematical thinking in these great hands-on labs. Students will analyze and interpret data to understand the properties of objects in the solar system. This engaging science unit is aligned with NGSS MS ESS1-3 Analyze and interpret data to determine scale properties of objects in the solar system. and Utah SEEd 6.1.3 Use computational thinking to analyze data and determine the scale and properties of objects in the solar system. Examples of scale could include size and distance.

Students learn about the size and scale of planets in the solar system. They will gather and analyze data from QR codes, websites, slide shows, and hands-on activities. After gathering data, the students will analyze and interpret data.

This resource includes:

  • two labs
  • a nonfiction article
  • interactive notebook flap
  • a slide show
  • QR code activities
  • quiz
  • answer keys

Teachers Love This Unit! ♥️

Morgon ⭐️ ⭐️ ⭐️ ⭐️ ⭐️ Extremely Satisfied

My kids just loved this unit. The labs really used mathematical thinking to help students understand the vastness of the solar system. So glad someone else figured that all out for me. The visuals were really helpful and my students loved making their little book!

Elizabeth ⭐️ ⭐️ ⭐️ ⭐️ Extremely Satisfied

Such a great unit! My students loved making the book and all the labs were engaging and easy to do. Great science concepts in this unit.

Students will use computational thinking to analyze data and learn more about the properties of objects in our solar system.

The informational text article is aligned with the CCSS for 6th-grade Reading Informational Text.

The two lab activities included are hands-on, using easy-to-find materials like string and large paper. Students will learn in a visual way about size and scale and distance in the solar system.

The labs include simple materials such as rope, paper, string, and tape. In these labs, students will create models to help them understand the data better.  Students will collect data from reputable websites using QR codes or clickable links. This resource also includes an assessment (quiz) in the style of end-of-year assessments. This is a perfect unit for students to compare properties of the solar system such as size and composition. NGSS MS ESS1-3

Science Concepts In this Unit Include:

Distance of planets in our solar system from the Sun

Comparing the Sizes of planets in our solar system

Properties and characteristics of each planet

Scale and properties of objects in our solar system

Students will use science and engineering practices.

  • Asking Questions and Defining Problems.
  • Developing and Using Models.
  • Planning and Carrying Out Investigations.
  • Analyzing and Interpreting Data.
  • Using Mathematics and Computational Thinking.
  • Constructing Explanations and Designing Solutions.
  • Engaging in Argument from Evidence.
