What educators are saying

I used this resource as an option for a book project to fulfill our 40 Book Challenge. Students loved the idea that they could create a suitcase for one of the characters in their book. This is a nicely organized resource that I will use again next year!
First time using this resource and the "suitcase" theme matched perfectly with the novel we were reading. I loved the character choice option and so did my students.

Description

Realistic Fiction Genre Suitcase Book Report Project

After reading a realistic fiction book, students pack a "suitcase" for the main character. The students' suitcases will include information on the:

  • Main Character
  • Setting
  • Conflict
  • Resolution
  • Student's Choice - an item related to the character
  • Book Review

Inside this Resource

This resource includes all student pages for the project, including an explanation of the project:

  • Suggested Lesson Plan
  • Project Introduction & Lesson Student Handouts
  • Suitcase Summary Page
  • Book Review Worksheet
  • Project Checklist
  • Rubric
  • How to Assemble the Suitcase Page
  • Color and Black & White Templates

Class time will vary depending upon how much time the teacher gives students in class to work on their project.

For my students, we spend part of a class period in the library looking for books in the genre that are on their levels. Students select a book and I keep a record of the books selected.

Once everyone has a book selected, I give students 2 1/2 - 3 weeks to read and complete the project.

In addition, I take three - five days and have students present their books and projects. (I use this as an oral presentation grade.) I find it is better to do a few presentations at a time.
