Description

This is a project that focusing on adding, subtracting, multiplying, and dividing fractions and mixed numbers. It also focuses on an understanding of area, surface area, area and perimeter concepts aligned with the common core. There a "I can" statements at the top that align with the common core for 6th grade math, as well as some repeats from common core 5th grade math. This unit has 12 story problems that focus on a blueprint of a house, where students must find the area of rectangles and irregular shapes to figure out how much carpet to lay, as well as figuring out the area of the walls to figure out how much surface to paint. It would be fun to bring in paint swatches as well and have the kids figure out what colors they would paint it and the cost. (The last page is an optional page as well that focuses on multiplying to find the cost, so it incorporates decimals as well. A great common core and rigorous units, using mathematical practices!
