Description

A great PBL unit for middle school or high school students who enjoy the Hip Hop genre! This unit was a HUGE success with my students!

Note: There is an embedded slideshow link, fillable PDFs of the Listening Log and the Teacher Rubric, and printable PDFs for everything. Due to copyright reasons, I do not provide editable Google Slides.

INCLUDES:

-Slideshow of Project Directions: writing composition, music component, performance

-Quickstart Teacher Summary

-1 Page Student Project Directions

-Rap Music Listening Log: listen to a variety of famous rap songs and have students identify techniques used. (**Make sure to play the clean versions of songs and feel free to change the list of songs according to your class' preferences. I have just provided some examples.)

-Assessment rubric: Composition, Music Accompaniment, Performance, and Feedback

-Example of Feedback Form: using Google Forms

This project can be used by ELA Teachers as well! With the listening log, students learn about various literary techniques used in poetry that are also used in rap songs. They have to listen to the music excerpts and identify the techniques.

***I have published an article with the Massachusetts Music Educators Journal (MMEJ) about my collaborations with Berklee College of Music Professor, Jarritt Sheel, on this project. Feel free to check out the article to learn about culturally-relevant pedagogy and project-based learning in the music classroom!

***In addition, I presented a session about this project at the Massachusetts Music Educators Conference in March 2020.
