What educators are saying

I teach the GATE class, and the students liked the various ways they could respond to a prompt rather than the first, next, then, and last.
I love this resource. Really breaks down the way to respond to reading or writing paragraphs for essays. It is an eye-opener.

Description

Are you searching for a step-by-step PowerPoint that can be used to introduce the RACE writing strategy to your students in a way that will grab their attention? You've come to the right place! Use this student-friendly PowerPoint to teach your students how to write a short response to a passage-based question. After reading a passage, students can use the RACE strategy to construct a formal response to the question that follows the passage. By teaching students this strategy, they learn how to write a strong response, and they learn the importance of citing evidence from the text to support their answers.

The RACE strategy involves:

R- Restate the question by turning it into a statement.

A- Answer all parts of the question.

C- Cite evidence from the text to support your answer.

E- Explain how your citation supports your answer.

PowerPoints filled with visuals are ideal for teaching new content to students because PowerPoints tend to be highly engaging and concepts can be easily broken down into understandable chunks of information. But let's face it... they are so time-consuming to create! Fortunately, now you have an option of using one that is already complete, kid-tested, and ready to go for you!

HERE'S THE SEQUENCE OF TOPICS COVERED IN THIS POWERPOINT:

Slides 1-10: Introduction Slides

  • Five world-class athletes who are known for competing in races are introduced at the beginning of the PowerPoint. These five athletes take turns presenting the PowerPoint slides.

Slides 11-17: Teaching Slides: Each component of RACE is defined and explained.

Slides 18-26: Students read two RACE responses and highlight each component.

Slides 27-33: Practice Passage #1 (Nonfiction)

For each practice passage, students read a passage and are guided through the process of constructing a RACE-based response.

Slides 34-40: Practice Passage #2 (Nonfiction)

Slides 41-46: Practice Passage #3 (Fiction)

Slides 47-54: Practice Passage #4 (Fiction)

Slides 55-57: Conclusion Slides

This file also includes a PowerPoint companion handout. Students will remain especially engaged when they write on their own handout as you advance through the PowerPoint.

Be sure to check out the PREVIEW where you will see many of the slides that appear in the complete PowerPoint!
