    Description

This bundle contains a 57-slide PowerPoint and a packet of twelve practice passages that focuses on the RACE writing strategy.

    The RACE strategy involves:

R- Restate the question by turning it into a statement.

A- Answer all parts of the question.

C- Cite evidence from the text to support your answer.

E- Explain how your citation supports your answer.

Begin by using the student-friendly PowerPoint to teach your students how to write a short response to a passage-based question. After reading a passage, students can use the RACE strategy to construct a formal response to the question that follows the passage. By teaching students this strategy, they learn how to write a strong response, and they learn the importance of citing evidence from the text to support their answers.

    The PowerPoint contains this format:

    • Slides 1-10: Introduction Slides
    • Slides 11-17: Teaching Slides: Each component of RACE is defined and explained.
    • Slides 18-26: Students read two RACE responses and highlight each component.
    • Slides 27-33: Practice Passage #1 (Nonfiction) For each practice passage, students read a passage and are guided through the process of constructing a RACE-based response.
    • Slides 34-40: Practice Passage #2 (Nonfiction)
    • Slides 41-46: Practice Passage #3 (Fiction)
    • Slides 47-54: Practice Passage #4 (Fiction)
    • Slides 55-57: Conclusion Slides

After you have worked through the PowerPoint, have your students practice reading passages and writing responses with the packet of 12 nonfiction reading passages. After reading each passage, students use the RACE strategy to construct a formal response to the short-answer question that follows the passage.

As an added bonus, each nonfiction passage is also followed by a worksheet that features four multiple-choice comprehension questions, making this worksheet packet ideal for test prep! Questions relate to text structure, vocabulary, cause and effect, sequence, fact and opinion, main idea, and more skills!

I encourage you to check out the PREVIEW of each individual resource!
