Description
Review prepositions with this engaging activity! Throughout this PowerPoint presentation, teams of students review prepositional phrases, including prepositions and their objects; then they compete to shoot baskets into a trash can. (Updated version now has a link to a Google Slides Presentation.)
In this game, there are four rounds. In each round, students identify prepositional phrases in the context of sentences; the sentences increase in difficulty and complexity with the addition of compound objects, additional modifiers, and other types of phrases. The rigor increases in the fourth round, when students must also decide if the prepositional phrases are acting as adjectives or adverbs.
The PowerPoint presentation includes the following:
- review slides
- game slides
- rules for students
- teacher instructions
- key
Research shows that physical movement can lead to increased learning, and this activity motivates students further by tapping into their love of sports. Using heterogeneous groups to play a game with friendly competition is an excellent way to meet the needs of all of your students and reward them for their success. This game can be used for formative assessment or review before a quiz or test.
Additionally, in this game, students read about an engaging informational topic, dog fighting, that lends itself to related lessons. Students could complete further research about pit bull dogs and/or write argumentative essays about legislation to ban them.
