Description
Here is a mini-unit for prepositions and prepositional phrases that combines three activities into one bundle. It includes an introductory Simon Says game, a guided practice Trashketball game (a PowerPoint or Google Slides), an independent practice worksheet, and bonus bookmarks.
In the review game, there are four rounds. In each round, students identify prepositional phrases in the context of a sentence; the sentences increase in difficulty and complexity with the addition of compound objects, additional modifiers, and other types of phrases. In round four, the challenge increases again, asking students to identify whether the prepositional phrases are behaving as adjectives or adverbs.
Part one of the worksheet directs students to underline the prepositional phrases in each of the twenty sentences and circle the prepositions. In part two, students write their own sentences using prepositions. Since the sentences provide information about the Humane Society, students also learn about the many ways the Humane Society advocates for animals. A key is provided.
Furthermore, I've included bookmarks for students to use when they are reading. As students read class novels, they record prepositional phrases from the context of their reading (mentor text). These bookmarks reinforce their understanding of prepositions.
