    Take a closer look at the lessons:

    Each component of the Pre-K Literacy Curriculum lesson plans was designed to pack as much impact as possible into your day.

    • Oral language and vocabulary - Students will be introduced to at least two vocabulary words each week. They will talk about the words, complete vocabulary sorts, and create predictable sentences.

    • Poetry - Each week includes an original poem.

    • Phonological and phonemic awareness - Each unit will cover phonological and phonemic awareness skills included: repeating sentences, counting words in sentences, rhyming, alliteration, syllables, onset and rime, blending, and segmenting.

    • Concepts of print - The Pre-K Literacy Curriculum will cover a variety of concepts of print skills including: parts of a book, how to handle a book, picture vs text, letters words and sentences, directionality, spaces, 1 to 1 correspondence, capital letters, and the return sweep.

    • Comprehension - Comprehension will be taught each week using interactive read alouds. Skills covered will include characters, setting, feelings, problem and solution, main idea, retelling, making connections, cause and effect, visualizing, and making predications.

    • Student worksheets - The student worksheets each day are an optional follow up to the interactive read aloud lessons. Many worksheets include two options for differentiation.

    • Nonfiction reader - An original nonfiction book is included each week based around the weekly theme.

    • Gross motor activities - A weekly gross motor and movement activity is included each week and matches to the theme.

    • Fine motor activities - A weekly fine motor activity is included. Some examples include using stickers, dabbing paint, cutting, and tracing.

    • Explore - Exploration activities are included on the day you read the nonfiction reader. These include science experiments and hands-on activities.

    • Art and crafts - A weekly art project or craft is included based on the story or theme.

    • Social emotional learning - Weekly social emotional learning lessons (SEL) are included. Some topics covered include: choices at school, calming down, handling disappointment, feelings and emotions, and being a good friend.

    Can I use the Pre-K Literacy Curriculum units with my preschool, transitional kindergarten, special education, or kindergarten classroom? Yes! All printable pages are not marked with the grade level so that you can feel comfortable using the Pre-K Literacy units no matter what grade level you teach.

    Would the Pre-K Literacy Curriculum work well in a homeschool setting? Yes! These lesson plans are designed to be easy to follow and include everything you need. They would work well in a homeschool setting.

    Do I have to follow the Pre-K Literacy Curriculum lesson plans exactly? No, I know that there may be more included than you have time for. Please feel free to break up the day or pick and choose the activities that would be the most meaningful for your class.

    Does the Pre-K Literacy Curriculum align with the Science of Reading? Yes! The Empowering Little Readers Pre-K Literacy Curriculum was designed with best practices from the Science of Reading regarding comprehension, language development, and phonological and phonemic awareness in mind.
