Description
Looking for a quick, powerful lesson on poetry? Do you love fun figurative language? This is the lesson for you! Poetry and figurative language come together in this lesson that teaches students about Carl Sandburg's poem "Fog" while also teaching an unusual figurative language device! This lesson in incredibly low in preparation (give them a copy & you're done), but incredibly high in power. Students will love learning something unusual. You'll love that the direct instruction is done for you!
We usually just teach personification as giving human characteristics to things that aren't human. But what about giving animal traits to things that aren't animals? That's zoomorphism!
They'll do more than learn about zoomorphism, though. They're going to rewrite Sandburg's poem using the technique themselves!
Most teachers never teach zoomorphism, choosing to use personification instead. However, zoomorphism is common in poetry and prose, and it's super fun. When your students know it, they'll see it everywhere. When they use it in their writing, it's powerful. Test evaluators are not expecting it, so it blows their minds when kids use it. Trust me.
This lesson has awesome differentiation options for you, but really, the coolness of this poetry/figurative language combo lesson is perfect for gifted learners as is.
Included in this Figurative Language Poetry Resource:
✅ Teacher instructions and ideas
✅ Zoomorphism direct instruction sheet
✅Writing prompt paper with student instructions for writing their own poem
It's perfect for grades four and up through tenth grade! Absolutely true!
If you're a homeschooler, you're going to love this!

⭐⭐WILLIAMS' MODEL OF CREATIVITY ⭐⭐
This lesson is based on Williams' Model of Creativity, a model designed to develop the traits of creativity in students. This particular resource focuses on three traits:
☀️ Flexibility - the ability to take different approaches and generate alternate ideas
☀️ Imagination - the ability to build mental pictures and visualize possibilities
☀️ Originality - the ability to generate unusual or unexpected ideas
In addition to addressing standards and providing an engaging and effective classroom experience, these activities will also build students' creativity skills.
Frequently Asked Questions:
1. I've never even heard of zoomorphism. Why should I teach it? Oh, friend, let me rock your world. Aside from the fact that it's just more accurate, it empowers young writers because they have another tool in their writing toolbox, and it's one that makes sense to them. Kids love animals (usually), and they will turn to this again and again. It also impresses evaluators who aren't expecting its use.
2. Can I leave this with a sub? 100%! This is perfect for a sub because all they need is the paper. The direct instruction is right there for them.
3. It says grades 4 - 10. Can it really stretch like that? ELAR is particularly flexible as a content area as far as grade levels are concerned. In this case, I'd absolutely use this lesson with my fourth graders all the way through my tenth graders. None of them have been taught it before, and the activity is self-adjusting for grade level.
4. I've never heard of the Williams' Model before. Is that a problem? Nope! These lessons are designed to be plug-and-play. I've done all the Williams' work for you (choosing traits to develop and strategies to use). All you need to do is use the activities. The activities will do the rest!
