Description

Phillis Wheatley is one of the best poets to arise in America. Her poems incorporate beautiful language and amazing descriptions. They offer a chance to get to know this inspiring, pre-revolutionary Black American Woman poet. Whether you want to incorporate this lesson with your Black History Month material, your Women's History lessons, poetry lessons, or colonial period history lesson, this poetry analysis will fit with them all.

Students will learn some background on Wheatley, including her tragically short life, but also see her determination to get her words published.

Students will interact with words they have not seen before, building their vocabulary but also exploring historical context, such as the lack of spelling standardization for certain words. They will then walk through a basic poetry analysis, experiencing the beauty of Phillis Wheatley's words for themselves.
