Description

Your students will no longer hate timed math fact drills with these Perfect Squares and Square Roots Sprints! These activities help students improve their mathematical fluency in a no-pressure way, so they develop a growth mindset and actually have fun! These EDITABLE Perfect Squares and Square Roots Sprints can be used for timed math practice. The Sprints contain timed math drills for three different skills and are an engaging way for students to improve their mathematical fluency with perfect squares, square roots, and simplifying radicals.

What’s included?

  • Perfect Squares Sprints (1A and B include only whole numbers, 2A and 2B include fractions and decimals, and 3A and 3B include whole numbers, fractions, and decimals combined.)
  • Square Roots Sprints (4A and 4B include only whole numbers, and 5A and 5B include fractions and decimals.)
  • Simplifying Radicals Sprints (6A and 6B, 7A and 7B)
  • Answer keys for all Sprints
  • Teacher instructions for use

Tips for Implementation:

  • Time your students for 2-4 minutes (adjust according to your specific classes) as they complete the problems on the front side of the Sprint as quickly as they can. Some students may finish the page before time is up and can check their work before putting their pencils down. Students stop working when time is called, even if they haven’t finished the page, and answers are provided. I like to go around the room and have students provide the answers. Students record how many problems they got correct (out of how many they completed, not the total number of problems) at the bottom of the first page. Repeat the same steps for the Sprint on the back side of the page.

  • The goal of these Perfect Squares and Square Roots Sprints is for students to complete more problems and get more problems correct on the back side than they do on the front. These timed math drills help students gain a growth mindset as they work toward improving their original score and time. These Sprints are not meant to be graded. Mathematical fluency is important, but so are student confidence and self-efficacy. Perfect Squares and Square Roots Sprints help students achieve all of the above!
