BUNDLE CONTENTS
54 Poems

Each poem has its own folder that includes:

    • “Side-by-Side” Annotation Organizer with the Complete Poem
The Side-by-Side Annotation Organizer includes the complete poem with space beside the text for student annotations and teacher comments.

    • Quick Picture Strategy
Students generate quick images of ideas they produce in their minds while they read. This process of personal creativity promotes associative recall; the students remember the significance of the drawing because no one is telling them what to draw. This is NOT your typical “draw a picture.” (Quick Picture examples available for specific poems-see Poem listing)

    • Annotation Organizer for “Close and Active Reading”
This simple organizer can be used for many different teaching situations, from basic annotation instruction to the development of independent student annotation. It can be used with any type of text, including short stories, novels, or nonfiction.

Sortable Spreadsheet Listing for Planning

This spreadsheet includes all of our poems and can be sorted by title, author, and number of lines. Poems with examples are also indicated.

BONUS - Keyword Strategy for Teaching Short Stories with Step-by-Step Guide

With the Keyword Strategy, students identify and use keywords in text segments to improve comprehension. This strategy

    • Works well for students who may find the story challenging
    • Addresses literal, inferential, and evaluative comprehension
    • Produces a study guide that heightens long-term recall

Step-by-Step Demonstration: We’ve included a bonus short story, “Lamb to the Slaughter,” with the related Keyword Strategy instructional guide, step-by-step example lesson, and example student annotation response.
