✨✨ Journaling is an incredible skill for young people to develop. It has long lasting benefits to their lives by helping them to positively express their emotions while improving their mental health, confidence and resilience.✨✨
This journal includes more than 10 October themed cover designs, and over 45 fine motor journal pages plus a blank page to assign your own journal entry. Additionally, every month will also include letter tracing for the entire alphabet (A-Z). This gives you the flexibility to follow the letter order of your choice. For themed alphabet activities, check out my CAPITAL LETTER FINE MOTOR JOURNAL and my LOWERCASE LETTER FINE MOTOR JOURNAL add-on resource. This journal gives you the freedom to choose what pages you want to do and when. Skip, omit, or repeat - the choice is yours!
This journal features the letter stroke and formations based on the Handwriting Without Tears® curriculum.
If you are starting off the year with distance learning, this journal is a great resource to send home to your students. When students return back to the classroom, it will be a seamless transition to resume their daily journal routine. This fine motor journal is ideal for teachers, occupational therapists, and parents. It's perfect for both distance learning and in class use.
Tips for using this resource:
- When working on these journal pages, please have your students sit at a table or desk with both feet touching the ground. Encourage them to use good posture while sitting.
- Proper pencil grip is highly encouraged. This will help with gaining the muscle memory needed for actual handwriting.
- When tracing the letters on the letter sheets, please help your students form the letter properly by following the directional arrows using the recommended stroke sequence.
My child does not hold his pencil correctly. What do I do now?
Don't worry! This is very common. When this happens, it is typically a sign that they need to improve their fine motor strength. Below are some great fine motor activities you can do to improve the muscles needed to help get a proper pencil grip.
- using tweezers to pick up small objects
- using eye droppers
- putting together puzzles
- playing with play dough
- lacing and stringing objects (cereal, beads, etc.)
- tearing paper
- sorting small objects using their fingers or tweezers
Before becoming a teacher, I was a graphic designer for Disney (specializing in typography and layout). Many other pre-writing worksheets out there do not meet the appropriate size, scale, spacing, and proportions needed for success with proper fine motor skill development. For our youngest learners, the actual design of the worksheet is as important as the content. I designed these tracing worksheets with the advice of two occupational therapists. This journal encourages young children to complete the detailed strokes needed for their next step - letter formations and handwriting.
If you plan to use this journal for the entire school year, please rest assured that each month will be released with ample time for your planning purposes.
