What educators are saying

I really like this as a simple activity that can work on a lot of different skills. I've been able to use this for prek - middle school depending on the needs of my students (I am an OT).
This is a wonderful resource for my special education students. I used it to put in their morning journal and it was fantastic! Thank you!

FORTY bonus covers to create seasonal and year round journal books

    Description

Your students will love their first daily journal. This fine motor journal bundle set is based on the Handwriting Without Tears® style letter strokes. My fine motor journals are a great way to develop prewriting skills and strengthen hand muscles needed to successfully write and draw. Develop healthy habits and routines for your preschool and kindergarten students with this occupational therapy approved fine motor journal.

Journaling is an incredible skill for young people to develop. It has long lasting benefits to their lives by helping them to positively express their emotions while improving their mental health, confidence and resilience.

    ✏️ What's included? ✏️

    • 12 months of seasonally themed fine motor journals - The monthly fine motor journals feature seasonal themes and a variety of journal cover designs. Each month will include 30+ journal pages for students to trace, cut, color, dab, and draw.
    • Each monthly set includes a variety of seasonly themed journal covers.
    • Additionally, every month will also include letter tracing for the entire alphabet (A-Z) based on the Handwriting Without Tears® style letter strokes. And in true Handwriting Without Tears® fashion, the lowercase and the uppercase letters are segregated. So you will receive 52 pages (26 lowercase, 26 uppercase) of letter tracing each month.
    • PLUS an exclusive BONUS! - 40 cover designs to create seasonal and year round journal books. This cover set is only available for this bundle. (summer journal books make a GREAT end of the year gift for your students!)

All journal pages feature the letter stroke and formations based on the Handwriting Without Tears® curriculum.

If you are starting off the year with distance learning, this journal is a great resource to send home to your students. When/if students return back to the classroom, it will be a seamless transition to resume their daily journal routine. This fine motor journal is ideal for teachers, occupational therapists, and parents. It's perfect for both distance learning and in class use.

My fine motor journals are progressively designed to get slightly more difficult with each month. Because school starting dates differ in each region, July-September will have the same level of difficulty. October will build off of September's skills, November will build off of October's skills, and so on. The June fine motor journal (the final month in the series) will be the most "difficult" out of the monthly fine motor journal series. However, if a student starts late in the school year, they should easily be able to "catch up" because the monthly progression is extremely subtle. Since the ultimate goal is to prepare student's for actual handwriting, The Capital Letter and Lowercase Letter fine motor journal sets are considered the highest level in "difficulty" out of this fine motor journal series.

Once your students have mastered these pre-writing fine motor activities, the next level are my beginning level handwriting practice sheets:

✏️ CAPITAL LETTERS - with phonics and capital letters only

✏️ LOWERCASE LETTERS - with phonics and lowercase letters only

    Tips for using this resource:

    • When working on these journal pages, please have your students sit at a table or desk with both feet touching the ground. Encourage them to use good posture while sitting.
    • Proper pencil grip is highly encouraged. This will help with gaining the muscle memory needed for actual handwriting.
    • When tracing the letters on the letter sheets, please help your students form the letter properly by following the directional arrows using the recommended stroke sequence.

My child does not hold his pencil correctly. What do I do now?

Don't worry! This is very common. When this happens, it is typically a sign that they need to improve their fine motor strength. Below are some great fine motor activities you can do to improve the muscles needed to help get a proper pencil grip.

    • using tweezers to pick up small objects
    • using eye droppers
    • putting together puzzles
    • playing with play dough
    • lacing and stringing objects (cereal, beads, etc.)
    • tearing paper
    • sorting small objects using their fingers or tweezers

Before becoming a teacher, I was a graphic designer for Disney (specializing in typography and layout). Many other pre-writing worksheets out there do not meet the appropriate size, scale, spacing, and proportions needed for success with proper fine motor skill development. For our youngest learners, the actual design of the worksheet is as important as the content. I collaborated with occupational therapists to create the perfect fine motor journal. The precise design encourages young children to gain the muscle memory and skills needed for their next step - handwriting.
