Description
Are you looking for a project to wrap up your genetics unit? Create a monster family with this no-prep, digital and print genetics project for middle school!
Students will experience how traits are passed from parents to offspring by creating a monster family. After hatching two monsters, students will determine their genoytpe and phenotype. By completing nine Punnett squares, they'll find the alleles for their baby monster. Students will create all three monsters to see what traits the family has in common.
In the digital version, students will use this interactive Google Slides presentation to find the genotypes and phenotypes of the parent monsters when they hatch an egg on the My Monster Family Incubator Website! The website is NOT hosted by Google and should not be blocked by your district's IT department.
The website also has video instructions for all students to access in case they have questions. This includes: how to use the zoom tool, how to reorder clipart, how to find the alleles and make the monsters, how to complete the Punnett squares, and how how to compete the writing portion. Videos are hosted on Youtube.
This project comes pre-accommodated with color coding, pre-written paragraph stems, and video instructions for students on IEPs or 504s in both the digital and print versions.
This project will cover concepts including genotypes, phenotypes, alleles, Punnett squares, and inheritance. This genetics project for middle school is best used after students have mastered the previous concepts.
Due to the variety of outcomes this project creates, keys for the 12 monster eggs on the website are provided. No other key is applicable.
