What educators are saying

My students loved using this resource for Punnett squares practice. The activities built on one another and required students to use critical thinking skills.

    Description

Ease your mind and use this bundle to teach your middle school students how to complete a Punnett square cross with single traits.

    This bundle includes:

    Investigation

Before you even talk about Punnett squares, let students investigate how they work. With some allele tiles and a Punnett square mat, your middle school students will be able to talk and work together to determine where each tile goes. This easy, no prep investigation will build their prior knowledge, so actually teaching Punnett squares will be a breeze!

    Video Notes

This instructional video shows students how to create a single trait cross between two parents. There are multiple examples for students to practice with. Watch as a class or assign individually!

The video comes embedded in a Google Slides presentation for easy distribution for distance learning. Watch as a class or assign individually!

    Practice

Three worksheets scaffold students knowledge of completing crosses. The first page gives students the alleles to practice crossing only. As they complete more practice, they have to use heredity vocabulary to determine parent alleles.

    Project

Wrap up the assignment with a project! Students will use the My Monster Incubator website to hatch mom and dad monsters to create a monster family!

This Punnett square bundle is perfect for a middle school classroom!

Develop and use a model to describe why asexual reproduction results in offspring with identical genetic information and sexual reproduction results in offspring with genetic variation. Emphasis is on using models such as Punnett squares, diagrams, and simulations to describe the cause and effect relationship of gene transmission from parent(s) to offspring and resulting genetic variation.
