Description
Can you students recognize when a word problem tells them to multiply fractions or divide fractions? This printable and digital resource will give your students practice at differentiating between word problems asking them to multiply or divide fractions. Students will use this resource to sort 16 fraction word problems into a multiplying column or a dividing column. The printable version includes a hands on sorting activity, a worksheet "sorting" version, and task cards to solve the problems. The digital version includes two drag and drop versions, and a type-in the answer version.
The PRINTABLE version includes:
- One activity sorting 16 word problems OR Two activities sorting half of the word problems, so 8 at a time.
- A worksheet version where students write "M" for multiply or "D" for divide instead of hands on sorting. A whole set and half set option is available for the worksheet too.
- Printable task cards so students can solve the problems on the included recording page or glue into a math journal.
- Answer keys for all options
The DIGITAL version includes
- Two drag and drop sorting versions. One to drag and drop all 16 on one slide or you can split it into two activities and students will sort 8 at a time.
- Two type-in "M" or "D" versions. One is a 8.5x11 slide with all 16 on the same slide. The other is split into two slides with 8 each.
- Answer keys for each version

Your download will be a .zip file with two PDFs. One is the printable version and one is a PDF with the links to both digital Google Slide versions.

- Multiplying a fraction by a whole number (as part of a set)

- Dividing a whole number by a fraction
*In the Google Slide version, the answer keys are included for students to self-check. If you do not want them to have access to the answer key, delete those slide.

*If you use the digital option to sort all at the same time, students should know how to zoom in on Google Slides… some of the fractions are small to read in that version. If you'd like larger font, assign the version with 8 at a time.
