What educators are saying

My students loved showing their math skills by engaging in the math talks provided in this resource. They really enjoyed engaging with the slides.

Description

**This product is featured in an Edutopia post about promoting talk in math class here: https://www.edutopia.org/article/more-talking-math-class-please **

Humans are social creatures. We use conversation to process information. Whether it's how you hurt my feelings on the playground or why two sets of items are not equal, we can deepen our understanding through explaining and listening.

This set of Math Talk Discussion Cards/Slides is a powerful tool for building number sense. Students have an opportunity to create their own understanding of quantities through comparing images and explaining their thinking.

Students make strong connections between multiple representations as they consider their responses to questions like, "Do both of these sets show 5?" and "Which image shows 4 - 3?"

Representations included:

  • ten frames
  • number lines
  • tallies
  • number and operation symbols
  • sets of circles, stars, and other shapes

Getting started is simple with this set of Math Talk Discussion Cards.

Included:

  • 36 front & back cards
  • Visuals for sparking discussion
  • Teacher prompts/questions to facilitate deep discussion

This "mathematical discourse" piece can be a challenge to weave into math class. Now teachers are embracing it and experiencing the incredible result: engaged students who understand concepts.

You won't believe the ideas students share when they are pushed to describe their thinking. Kids solve math problems in all different ways. When we let them solve problems and talk about the process, we get a glimpse into their fascinating minds.

Standards

to see state-specific standards (only available in the US).
Count to 100 by ones and by tens.
Count forward beginning from a given number within the known sequence (instead of having to begin at 1).
Understand the relationship between numbers and quantities; connect counting to cardinality.
When counting objects, say the number names in the standard order, pairing each object with one and only one number name and each number name with one and only one object.
Understand that the last number name said tells the number of objects counted. The number of objects is the same regardless of their arrangement or the order in which they were counted.
