Leveled Solfege Reading/Performing Activity

This SMART Notebook file has solfege patterns that are leveled for PreK - middle school.   (SMART Notebook files work with SMART Board classroom technologies.  You will need to have SMART Notebook installed in order to use this file as intended.)

Kodaly hand signs, solfege syllables, and movable "do" are the foundations for this activity.

In the second page of this activity there is a review of Kodaly hand signs and their solfege syllables.

The third page in the activity has a "Click and Drag Pattern Maker" where the teacher or students can click and drag hand signs into the box to make solfege patterns.

For the rest of the activity each difficulty/grade level is notated with a different color highlight bar. This highlight bar can be moved over the pattern you want students to read/perform to make it easy for students to follow along. Patterns range in difficulty - beginning with 4 beat patterns only using "So" and "Mi" and ending with multiple-measure phrases in different key signatures.

TIPS:

- You can have music with a steady beat and consistent tonality playing while we use this activity so students can feel the pulse and hear the tonal center while they sing. (This is also a great opportunity to introduce world music/traditional music from other countries to your classroom.)

- You can also have students read the entire page or two full pages of rhythms for fluency. (For two pages at a time, change your view to "Dual Page Display").

-You can use a difficulty/grade level below your students' abilities as a warm up, use the appropriate level as practice, and then use levels above as a challenge. (Students love to "level up" to a grade level higher than where they are in school - a GREAT way to motivate the class.)
