What educators are saying

My students connected with the article very well. I used literary circles to create an celebration for Black History. They mastered the assignment and asked to read the entire book.

Description

This is a classroom tested reading comprised of the first half of King's great Letter from Birmingham Jail. I have included the first half for several reasons -- it already is a 10 page reading (5 double sided) with a page of vocabulary words with relevant definitions. Your handout will have space and lines for student responses to 9 study guide questions, which you can assign for reading comprehension or as prewriting in advance of an essay. I have added an answer key. The vocabulary is significant and will be rich in itself. You can put these words onto Quizlet and have students study from there. I probably put 10 hours into preparing this packet, so it should be well worth the purchase. The ELA Common Core encourages nonfiction reading and texts that portray a thesis with a clear argument and eloquent support and elaboration. Look no further if you are seeking an excellent mentor text!
