Description

This unit on “The Little Prince” (Le Petit Prince) is written with the TPRS / CI teacher in mind. It is an extremely complete and comprehensive unit that provides literally everything you will need to teach this French classic. The lessons will take you at least one quarter (13 weeks) to complete, more if you choose to take your time and be more complete in your discussions and activities.

In this unit, you will get 15 files. All are written in Microsoft Word. This took a ton of work and time to do, and it will save you weeks, if not months, of time and prep work
.
1. (Prof) PP – CI: This is the main teaching resource file. It is over 160 pages long. In it you will find: (a) introduction, teaching explanations, hints, and suggestions (b) background information about St. Exupery and the book that you can use in class, including questions (French only version and English only version) (c) a brief explanation of the Passé Simple for your students (d) Brief introductions into idiomatic expressions and the most famous quotes and (e) for EVERY CHAPTER, you will get (1) vocabulary lists with translations for each chapter. I’ve included most everything: edit for your own classes. (2) a brief pop-up grammar point (3) circling and PQA questions (4) advanced questions and their answers for upper level thinking skills or advanced classes (5) a chapter summary (6) an optional verb exercise pulled from the chapter. I put it all together in one file for you; feel free to edit it to suit your needs. Everything in this file is designed for you to either print out or display on a white board or screen.

2. A picture file. In TPRS teaching, you are going to try to stay in French as much as possible. To this end, I’ve organized pictures of all the vocabulary words I could for each chapter, including, of course, the illustrations from the book. I’ve also included directions on how to use them, and how to use them to prompt oral discussions, reviews and oral assessments. 246 pictures.

3. A pdf file of the book, in French (107 pgs)

4. A pdf file of the book, translated to English (64 pgs.)

5. A file of memory games you can play with your class, with instructions ( 8 files) These are like the card games that go face down on a table, and a student chooses two cards to turn upright. If they go together, it's a match. If they don't go together, the student returns them to their original places. I've given the games as well as photos that show how to play.

6. A file of easy five-point quizzes for each and every chapter. Each chapter has two quizzes (version A and version B) so that you can give one version to the class and one to absentees, if you like, or for you to choose the version you like better, or use one version one year and another version the following year. You decide. (I divided one chapter in two parts, so there are 28x2=56 quizzes and their keys). You can print these off or use them on-screen as you prefer.

7. A file of tests. Each test has a study guide, a test, and an answer key. There is a test for chapters 1-5, 6-10, 11-15, 16-20, 21-25. Then, there is an “end of the book test” and another “part of the final exam” test. (7 study guides, tests and test keys). The end of the book test and final exam are not true CI/ TPRS. But, I know how sometimes you may have an administrator who demands these assessments who really doesn't "get" TPRS. So, use those if that is the case for you. I've also given several ideas for other ways to assess that are not "pencil and paper" assessments, and that are more TPRS friendly.

8. There are eight one-page “reciprocal reading” lessons that can be done by the students alone, in partner pairs, instead of having teacher-led days every day. Complete instructions are given to you to show you how to train your students to do this. It is a CI friendly teaching technique, and promotes more active and cooperative learning, as well as metacognition.

9. There is one file, with two pages, of Enrichment songs. These are 21st century modern songs I’ve found that use some of the key concepts of this book in their lyrics. I’ve given you the lyrics and translations of the lyrics for these songs if you choose to use them. Videos are available on Youtube, etc.

10. There is a short PowerPoint presentation about St. Exupery you may also use.

I've included everything possible for you. I do not recommend that you use it all. That would be overkill, and take the joy out of the book. But, I do recommend that you pick and choose what works best for you and your classes, and occasionally vary the routines a bit, using the options I've given you.

I’ve done this as a labor of love, in my retirement. However, I am not a native speaker, and, although I have proofread everything multiple times, I’m sure I’ve made some typos and other errors. Please be kind. If you find I’ve made an error, please notify me so that I can correct it. Merci.

I hope you and your students come to love this book as much as I have!

P.S.This is a revision of the previous unit I had for sale here on TPT that received multiple high ratings. I believe this is unit is a much improved version of the previous unit, which was my biggest seller. This one is geared just for TPRS / CI teachers. If you previously purchased my previous unit, take a look at the preview package here. If you would like this unit instead, email me and I'll make it happen at no charge.
