Description

This lesson is going to highlight, pop artist Jim Dine, and there is a mini lesson with Jackson Pollock (if you choose to combine the two artists!!!!)

I use for Elementary school students.  I like to do this Lesson at the same time for all of my elementary classes and each grade can do a different project!!!!!!

This Lesson is part of a UNIT the first 7 slides will review other artists before moving onto Jim Dine (You may delete these before presenting) I do this to help students review the themes the pop artists used!!!!

Basic Understanding for the UNIT!

  • Pop art = Popular imagery 
  • The pop artists chose popular imagery from their (words, text, ads, celebrities, culture, brands etc. 
  • Basically the pop artists chose a theme that they really liked!!!!! They chose to express that common theme throughout their work!

Objectives:

  • Students will learn basic coloring and painting techniques to make a Heart art like Jim Dine!
  • Before starting, show PowerPoint (google slides) on Jim Dine, focusing on his heart paintings and drawings. Discuss the distinguishing characteristics of his artwork, namely that the hearts are always head on, never tilted, always uniformly displayed, and never the same. Remind students of Jim Dine's 'motto' "No two hearts the same."
  • Students will create a heart that demonstrates watercolor, pastel or crayon techniques. 
  • Students will learn how to make decisions about their work, by choosing mediums they want to work with! 
  • Students will increase observation skills.
  • Developing the ability to discuss works of art.
  • Developing visual arts vocabulary. 
  • Developing the ability to reflect on the process of making art.
  • Students will learn to use resources to extend learning beyond the classroom.

WHAT DOES THIS LESSON INCLUDE?
