Description
Pica, Libel, Beat… Wouldn’t teaching Journalism class be easier if everyone could use and understand standardized subject specific vocabulary? Many of today’s students are unfamiliar with even the most basic journalism jargon, but getting everyone on the same page can be easy with the versatile vocabulary pack.
I created the journalism vocabulary word list to help ensure everyone on my newspaper staff was using the same words to plan, work as a team, and provide feedback. It turned out to be a valuable resource for my Introduction to Journalism class; I printed it on a bright sheet of paper and many students kept it to reference all semester.
The WORD LIST is set up in 4 sections (general, writing, photography, design) so it is not too overwhelming at first glance. This also gives options to you for introducing the words. For example, I give the general section terms and quiz at the start of the semester and then use the other sections to introduce terms as we enter the corresponding units.
The PRACTICE ASSIGNMENT is a fun activity that gets students working with a real newspaper. They find examples of the vocab terms like “byline and caption” inside of a daily metro paper. It really helps them to get a visual for the words and remember them better when it comes to quiz time.
There are three QUIZZES included in this pack. There are two introduction quizzes—you may consider offering one as a practice quiz or a retake, or you may just want to hand out two versions to reduce wandering eyes. Also, there is an advanced version you can offer for an extra challenge, or to an advanced section or newspaper club.
Feel free to use the included resources as they best fit your classroom. Here are a handful of ideas to get you started: introduce words as they naturally appear in your class units; start the semester off with an open notes quiz; plan a sub-day where students can work with a partner on the practice squares activity; include a quiz as part of your newspaper editor applications; ask students to label these terms in other assignments you do in class; etc., etc., etc.

9.11.4.4 and 11.11.4.4 Determine or clarify the meaning of unknown and multiple-meaning words and phrases based on grades [9-12] reading and context, choosing flexibly from a range of strategies.
