What educators are saying

So far, I am loving it for my 3s. The strategies are broken down and my threes are able to understand and show me how they use each strategy. I will also get division as I found the power point extremely clear and helpful.
I used this resource to go over the listed concepts that were presented in our curriculum. My students were not "getting it." I needed another way to teach this concept.

Learning Objective

Students will use four different strategies (equal groups, arrays, repeated addition, and skip counting) to determine the product of a multiplication problem.

Description

Are you searching for a step-by-step PowerPoint that can be used to introduce multiplication strategies to your students in a way that will grab their attention? You've come to the right place! This 49-slide PowerPoint begins by presenting a scenario in which multiplication needs to be used to buy carnival tickets. Also, a multiplication equation is labeled with factors and product. Then, four common multiplication strategies are introduced: equal groups, arrays, repeated addition, and skip counting. After each strategy is introduced, four practice opportunities are provided so that students can immediately practice each strategy for themselves.

PowerPoints filled with visuals are ideal for teaching new content to students because PowerPoints tend to be highly engaging and concepts can be easily broken down into understandable chunks of information. But let's face it... they are so time-consuming to create! Fortunately, now you have an option of using one that is already complete, kid-tested, and ready to go for you!

HERE'S THE SEQUENCE OF TOPICS COVERED IN THIS POWERPOINT:

  • Slides 1-7: Introduction to Multiplication
  • Slides 7-13: Equal Groups
  • Slides 14-21: Arrays
  • Slides 22-27: Repeated Addition
  • Slides 28-33: Skip Counting
  • Slides 34-38 introduce the commutative property. Students learn how the commutative property can be helpful when choosing a multiplication strategy.
  • Slides 39-49 provide practice opportunities where students can choose which strategy they want to use to solve the problem.

This PowerPoint includes a matching 5-page companion handout. Students can write on the handout, recording answers, as you progress through the PowerPoint.

Interpret products of whole numbers, e.g., interpret 5 × 7 as the total number of objects in 5 groups of 7 objects each. For example, describe a context in which a total number of objects can be expressed as 5 × 7.
Use multiplication and division within 100 to solve word problems in situations involving equal groups, arrays, and measurement quantities, e.g., by using drawings and equations with a symbol for the unknown number to represent the problem.
