Description

This presentation is designed to be used as an introduction to the concept of culture and cultural appropriation. By using the idea of a house as a metaphor for culture, students are encouraged to explore the ways their own culture tells a story about them, and are cautioned to be sensitive and let others take the lead when it comes to their own culture. After the presentation the students were asked to draw their own "Culture Houses".

Note: The teacher should be sensitive to students who may use the presentation as a springboard to discuss cultural or racial stereotypes. Be very wary to not encourage students to make assumptions about what they would find in specific "Culture Houses."

These materials were used by grades 4 - 6 in a social justice education class.
