Description

Using PowerPoint/Google Slides, this ready-to-go digital activity (NO material prep needed) is designed to scaffold composition instruction for upper elementary and middle school students in a fun and engaging manner that guides students deliberately towards independent composition later.

This product includes:

- Teacher Guide

- Instructions for Students

- 4 Digital Activities (Designed for Distance Learning) in PowerPoint and Google Slides (You pick which fits best for your needs)

- PRINTABLE Black and White Worksheet Version for Distance Learning with packets

- 2 Rubrics

For Part One and Part Two, students will randomly generate a number. That number will have an assigned note or pitch and students will create their melody based on chance. Each part isolates a musical element to help students reinforce their skills before moving on to Part Three.

Part Three gives students two activities with 12 measures to compose their own melody within the following parameters: G major pentatonic scale (and must start and end on G), given the time signature (4/4), only allowed step-wise motion or skips in the tonic triad, and they must use at least three different rhythmic elements. These parameters are a step up from the beginner activity, giving them more independence and creativity without throwing them into the deep end.

For extra credit (you can determine the amount), there is an additional direction to have students write in the solfege of their melody for your chorus students. (Or a fun challenge and bridge to introducing solfege to your General Music/Band/Orchestra kiddos! :D I'm always here to spread the gospel of solfege, haha.)

***This product is intended for use with Composing by Chance for Beginners - Music Distance Learning as the next step toward composition independence for upper elementary and middle school music students.***

Giving students an open-ended assignment like "Compose 32 measures" can be daunting to a student, especially beginners. To nurture their skills, this activity places parameters that students can easily navigate without feeling overwhelmed and stressed.
