Using PowerPoint/Google Slides, these 12 ready-to-go digital activities (NO prep needed!) are designed to scaffold composition instruction for upper elementary and middle school students in a fun and engaging manner that guides students deliberately towards independent composition later. You can use this activity with Google Classroom or whichever LMS your school recommends. :) For your kiddos without tech at home, there are black and white worksheets for the intermediate and advanced activities that you can add for physical packets to send home.
This product includes:
- 3 Teacher Guides
- Instructions for Students
- 4 Digital Activities (Designed for Distance Learning) in PowerPoint and Google Slides (You pick which fits best for your needs) for each level - 12 Activities Total
- PRINTABLE Black and White Worksheet Version for Distance Learning with packets for Intermediate & Advanced Activities
- Rubrics for Each Activity
Beginner Activities: For Part One and Part Two, students will randomly generate a number. That number will have an assigned note or pitch and students will create their melody based on chance. Each part isolates a musical element to help students reinforce their skills before moving on to Part Three.
Part Three gives students the German Folk song, Music Alone Shall Live. The first and last measure will remain the same and students will manipulate one musical element however they would like as arranging practice. Students are unable to change the time signature or the key for Part Three and only change one element at a time - great for all students, but especially your SPED students. This activity can be used for accommodations like working with fewer items on the page while still assessing content knowledge, use of manipulatives digitally, and isolating musical elements to increase understanding.
Intermediate Activities: For Part One and Part Two, students will randomly generate a number. That number will have an assigned note or pitch and students will create their melody based on chance. Each part isolates a musical element to help students reinforce their skills before moving on to Part Three.
Part Three gives students two activities with 12 measures to compose their own melody within the following parameters: G major pentatonic scale (and must start and end on G), given the time signature (4/4), only allowed step-wise motion or skips in the tonic triad, and they must use at least three different rhythmic elements. These parameters are a step up from the beginner activity, giving them more independence and creativity without throwing them into the deep end.
Advanced Activities:
For Part One, students will randomly generate a number. That number will have an assigned note or pitch and students will create their melody based on chance. For Part Two, students will randomly generate a number to determine the key signature. Each part isolates a musical element to help students reinforce their skills before moving on to Part Three.
Part Three gives students two activities with 12 measures to compose their own melody in the key signature of their choice. Students are required to start and end on the tonic of the key signature they chose (C, F, or G Major) and use at least three different types of rhythms. Students are advised to avoid large leaps and make sure their melodies are singable/playable.
