During a time when there weren’t many famous American artists, and there were even fewer famous women artists, Mary Cassatt created beautiful works of art that are still well-known today!
Introduce middle school art classes to French Impressionism with this brief art history lecture about Mary Cassatt’s life and art. Students will be able to follow along with this art history lesson easily with the lecture note printouts. (There is an answer key for the notes for the instructor’s reference.) Students will then create a master study copy of an artwork by Mary Cassatt. They will create large scale copies using crayons, oil pastels, and chalk pastels.
This downloadable zip file includes the “Impressionism Mary Cassatt Lecture,” which is a 40 slide PowerPoint presentation. There is a two page printable “Impressionism Mary Cassatt Organizer” PDF for students to take notes, and there is an answer key. The included lesson plan is two pages long and it’s a PDF. The “Mary Cassatt Revisited Demonstration and Tips” is a PowerPoint presentation with 49 slides. There are two student examples at the beginning, but the bulk of this presentation includes a demonstration with written tips to assure student success. The “Mary Cassatt” Images PDF is 9 pages long. Each page contains four 4” tall color reproductions of Cassatt’s drawings and paintings to print to use for reference for the drawing assignment. There are 36 images total. The art making project rubric is a two page long PDF. There are 4 rubrics per page that will evaluate shape & form, proportion, and color. The first page has the project valued at 100 points, but the second page has blank point values for teacher who want to edit the project’s points.
