Description
This is an excellent assignment to get your students to really dig into Environmental Value Systems at the beginning of your course, or at any interval when bringing them up will help to reinforce a concept (Topics 1, 3, 4, 5, 7 & 8 all work well). Students will listen to/watch music videos for three different songs and then read two children's books; all of which can be found for free on YouTube. They will then analyze each in terms of their own initial reaction, the EVS they believe is exemplified by the song/book and reflect on the impact of the media on a larger scale using a prompt from philosopher Immanuel Kant.
As AI is becoming more and more common this assignment is very helpful as two of the three songs are not well known enough to be analyzed by AI, as is one of the children's books. I have found that by comparing the analysis of the more mainstream song & book to the others students who have used AI are readily detected.
I really like how this assignment forces students to think about EVS' and how they impact the world we live in. The media chosen exemplifies all three EVS' and many include layers of subtlety that will inspire interesting reflections and analysis. Sample answers are included, although students will come up with a variety of responses.
