Description

This social narrative supports students to identify emotions in others by learning to recognise facial expressions, body language and verbal cues. The second part of this resource helps students practice linking facial expressions and body language to emotions, through a fun exercise. In this section, students can complete ‘missions’ by identifying non-verbal cues in the pictures and then selecting the correct emotion (digital and print versions provided).

Social Narrative (PDF and PowerPoint) - 11 pages

The social narrative briefly covers how to guess how others might be feeling by looking for ‘clues’. It has a detective theme, which briefly introduces facial expressions, body language and non-verbal cues.

Identifying emotions in others activity (PDF and PowerPoint) - 14 pages

This activity asks student(s) to be detectives and complete missions. Their mission, should they choose to accept it, is to identify facial expressions and body language clues which help guess how someone might be feeling.

In the print version students are asked to draw a magnifying glass around each clue or in the digital version they can drag the magnifying glasses over each expression. Then students must select the correct emotion for how the person could be feeling. In the digital versions students can delete the incorrect emotions (to leave the correct emotion in the square) and if the print version students circle to correct emotion.

Each page features a different emotion to identify. Emotions included are:

  6. Happy
  7. Sad
  8. Silly
  9. Shy
  10. Scared
  11. Confused
  12. Proud
