What educators are saying
Description
In this digital breakout activity, students will consider important social justice questions about the history of Thanksgiving, including, "What do you know about the history of Thanksgiving?" "How much of what you know is actually what happened and how much is a national myth?" and "Whose perspective do you consider when celebrating?"
The full version of this activity includes 7 sources, each with a number of “locks” that students must solve before moving on to the next source. Some “locks” take the form of reading comprehension questions while others are more puzzle-like. An answer key is included.
Sources include:
- The Plymouth Thanksgiving Story (The “first” Thanksgiving from a Wampanoag perspective)
- Thanksgiving Wasn't Always a National Holiday. This Woman Made It Happen: Article
- Suppressed Speech (A modern take on Thanksgiving, from a Wampanoag perspective)
- National Day of Mourning: Wikipedia article
- The Occupation of Alcatraz: article
- The Alcatraz Proclamation
- Un-Thanksgiving Day: Wikipedia article
This bundle also includes a condensed version that includes only sources 1-4 and a very shortened West Coast version that includes only sources 5-7.
These three activities mean you can scale this up or down for any classroom with NO PREP!
