Description

Ancient Egypt is part of the sixth grade social studies curriculum at our school, and this project is a great tie-in. Egyptian mythology is such a rich subject, and the children enjoy picking a god or goddess to draw.

We learn about frontalism and how ancient Egyptian draftsmen drew using a grid. This lesson covers how to introduce a gridded drawing to students, and how to help them draw their god or goddess with the correct proportions.

After the drawings are complete, the kids do a warm-up activity to learn how to work with oil pastels and create beautiful color gradations.

Included in this project are gridded line drawings of 12 gods and goddesses, descriptions of each, a handout on ancient Egyptian patterns, a step-by-step drawing guide, and an oil pastel warm-up sheet.

Supplies needed: colored oil pastels, black oil pastels for each student, 9 x 12” pastel paper or white or tan construction paper, pencils, and rulers (optional).
