Description
A ready-to-implement reading resource to help intermediate French students learn about the history and culture of le premier avril. But, watch out because they might say “poisson d’avril” to you! Included are 4 reading passages between an American boy and a French boy regarding the traditions and present-day norms of April 1st in France. After each correspondence, there are comprehension questions (16 total). Available as a printable, self-grading Google Form™ or TpT Easel. Save the time of creating and grading AND enjoy teaching and discussing this fun annual event in France!
What are the questions like?
There are 4 different sections of the boys’ correspondence. After each section, there are various comprehension questions: vrai/faux, multiple choice, fill-in. There is a total of 16 questions.
Also, the reading passages and questions are displayed as images to help prevent the use of automatic translators in the Google Forms™ & Easel formats.
How much prep is needed?
Google Form™/Easel: share link with students
PDF: print and distribute
Which level of French?
There is a mix of present and past tenses as well as more varied vocabulary, so intermediate to advanced level students would be best.
There are cognates (des journalistes, l'origine, continuer) and words students would most likely be familiar with (avril, le poisson, couper, le dos).
Potential new words that will be seen in the text include: une farce, une blague, accrocher, rigoler, l'époque, le nouvel an, le roi, la pêche, s'amuser.
You know your students best; some will be able to deduce what words mean in context and others will need help.

Three ways to implement:
➯➯1. PRINT
PDF printable. Just print and implement into class! Answer keys are provided.
➯➯2. Google Form™
This is an editable activity designed in Google Forms™. You can add questions of your own to the activity or delete any questions you do not want to use. You can also change the answer type if desired (short answer, multiple-choice, etc.) or switch the order of the questions. It is set up to grade automatically for you.
You will receive instructions on how to download this file to your Google Drive and how to share with students. You and your students must have a free Google account in order to access the activity.
This activity can be shared with students through email, Google Classroom, Moodle, etc.
➯➯3. TPT's Easel Tool
This resource is also available via TpT's Easel Activity Tool. However, due to the limitations of Easel, the reading passages are viewed as questions, so the points are skewed. Plus, there is only multiple choice and vrai/faux as answers. There are no fill-in or long answer options. This resource still grades for you.
