Description

Are you looking for a fun way to engage your Marketing students? Simulate a focus group as part of your market research unit. In this focus group activity, students will research focus groups, write and select questions for a focus group simulation, act as moderators to ask their questions, and reflect on the experience. Add this digital and printable resource to your marketing lessons and skip the prep!

This learning tool promotes active learning by putting students in the role of moderator and focus group participant. This resource is perfect for an Introduction to Business and Marketing or Marketing I course.

Optionally, provide samples of a product such as store-brand soda, fruit snacks, or chips to use as inspiration for focus group questions. Samples are not required, you can also select a product such as pens or markers as the basis for the activity.

This activity starts by having students use the Internet to research basic information about focus groups. A suggested answer key is included. Next, students will write questions for a component of the marketing mix for the selected product. Then, students will get with a group of ~6 to 10 students to simulate the focus group. During this time students will take turns asking their pre-written questions and recording responses. Last, students will respond to 6 prompts reflecting on the focus group experience. A suggested answer key is included.
