Fly Girls (YRE) is the true story of women pilots who sought to break the gender barrier in aviation between World War I and World War II. Highlighting the true stories of five remarkable women pilots: Florence Klingensmith, Ruth Elder, Amelia Earhart, Ruth Nichols, and Louise Thaden, O’Brien weaves personal and professional narratives to bring these aviation pioneers’ stories to life. From setting the fastest known speed and altitude records to completing Transcontinental and Transatlantic flights, including participation in the most famous air derby of the time, the Bendix, these women pushed the limits both in the skies and in the press. Many male writers and pilots doubted their abilities, but it only fueled their determination to excel.

Male pilots who competed in derbies and races at the time were hailed as heroes, but women were ridiculed in the press, scrutinized at every turn, and had to fight twice as hard to earn the opportunities men were given. In a time period where women had just earned the right to vote, these women became aviation suffragettes, flying with guts, grit, and determination.

O’Brien’s Young Readers’ Edition brings to life these five pioneering women of the skies. Filled with tantalizing stories of nail-biting takeoffs, mid-air calamity, and personal drama, young readers will enjoy reading about these trailblazing women who paved the way for future women pilots of today.
