Hidden Figures is the true story of African-American women who serve as human calculators during the pioneering days of aviation and aeronautics. From World War II through the golden age of NASA’s space and lunar exploration, these women courageously and fearlessly led the National Advisory Committee for Aeronautics (known today as NASA) as they increased airplane production and eventually helped launch the United States into space exploration.

Author Margot Lee Shetterly uses real photographs, quotes, and research to paint the true story of these pioneers who participated in some of the greatest aeronautic successes in United States history. Showing grit, courage, and perseverance, the women highlighted in this book tell the story of pioneering in a field where nothing short of perfection is acceptable.

Fly Girls (YRE) is the true story of women pilots who sought to break the gender barrier in aviation between World War I and World War II. Highlighting the true stories of five remarkable women pilots: Florence Klingensmith, Ruth Elder, Amelia Earhart, Ruth Nichols, and Louise Thaden, O’Brien weaves personal and professional narratives to bring these aviation pioneers’ stories to life. From setting the fastest known speed and altitude records to completing Transcontinental and Transatlantic flights, including participation in the most famous air derby of the time, the Bendix, these women pushed the limits both in the skies and in the press. Many male writers and pilots doubted their abilities, but it only fueled their determination to excel.
